Years of Experience

You probably want to know who I am and why you should listen to what I have to say about growing your business. Fair question. I’m Paul Hughes, and I’ve been working in business and technology for over 50 years. I’m based right here in Kingsville, Ontario, and I run Doorways Into Your Business. But my journey to get here is worth telling, because it shapes how I work with local business owners like you.

How It Started: St. Clair College to Toronto and Alberta

I graduated from St. Clair College (Windsor, Ontario) in 1976. That doesn’t sound like ancient history until you realize what that year actually meant for technology. We’re talking about the era of IBM mainframes and keypunch cards. I started my IT management career in Toronto and Alberta at a time when keeping the systems running wasn’t optional. It was everything. If your system went down, the business suffered. Period. That’s what taught me early on: deliver or fail.

In 1981, I was implementing IBM PROFS. That was one of the first email and word processing systems for enterprise customers. Most people had never heard of email. I was building it, configuring it, training teams on it. It had to work.

Then I moved to Prentice-Hall Canada as IT Manager. This was the mid-1980s, and PCs were coming to offices across the country. Most companies had no idea what to do with them. Prentice-Hall was one of the first companies in Canada to implement PCs at scale. I led that. I wasn’t reading about technology trends. I was creating them.

Three Decades Around the World

After a number of successful IT Management roles in Toronto, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta, my reputation for delivery opened doors globally. My first big international overseas experience was when I moved to Geneva Switzerland to work in their head office in charge of technical services for all of their centres around the world. After two years in Geneva I was transferred by IATA to work in Sydney Australia and was responsible for a very large data centre implementation and migration project that affected 200 airlines and over 2,000 travel agents across Australia.  This was implemented on time and on budget and was recognized as one of the best implemented projects in IATA worldwide and received high praise from all of the airline financial management teams who were affected by this project (IATA Bank Settlement Plan).

After completing that assignment I started my consulting career and I spent the next three decades working and living in more than 30 countries. Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. I managed teams of up to 30 people. I delivered projects worth millions. I solved problems that others thought were unsolvable.

Why did I keep growing in this role? Because I paid attention to details others missed. I refused to compromise or cut corners. I listened to what a business actually needed instead of pushing whatever technology vendors wanted to sell. In every job, I delivered on time, on budget, with real solutions that worked in the real world. Not theoretical. Real.

Coming Home and Rediscovering My (New) Purpose

In 2019, I came back to Canada. After decades of global consulting and IT management, something shifted. I settled in Kingsville, Ontario, and I started thinking about all those years working with corporations and governments and multinational teams. I realized something important: the skills that solved million-dollar problems were the exact same skills that could help a local solopreneur in Kingsville, Ontario to grow and thrive.

I didn’t need to be in Manhattan or London to make an impact. I could do it right here in the Windsor-Essex region, with people I can actually sit down and have coffee with.

That’s when I rebranded myself as White Beard Solutions. I was bound and determined not to become yet another IT management consultant or web designer. I’m calling myself a Master Business Craftsman. Someone who brings 50 years of experience to the real problems facing real businesses in my community.

What That Means for You

Khalibre 2015-2017
My team of software engineers and project managers I managed

When you work with me at Doorways Into Your Business, you’re working with someone who has watched technology evolve from mainframes to mobile AI. I’ve implemented systems in Fortune 500 companies. I’ve coached solopreneurs. I’ve sat across the table from CEOs and listened to home business owners explain their struggles. I’ve solved problems for both.

I don’t overwhelm you with jargon. I don’t sell you tools you don’t need. I listen to what you actually need, and I recommend solutions that fit your situation. Sometimes that’s a website. Sometimes it’s SMS marketing or a booking system or a CRM. And it might even be an AI Support Agent.  But sometimes it might be just helping you use tools you already have but aren’t using effectively are helping you get your systems and procedures working better.

I don’t disappear after the project is done. I’m based right here in Kingsville, Ontario. I’m a small business owner myself. I understand the pressure of wearing multiple hats, managing tight budgets, and needing solutions that work right now.

Your success isn’t a transaction for me. It’s the measure of whether I’ve done my job right. When your business grows, I’ve done my job. When you have more time to focus on your business and your family because you are not spending time putting out fires then I know the project’s been a success. That’s how I measure myself.
